Argentina

Welcome to Antarctica! This extended active adventure pushes south along the Peninsula. It’s goal- to cross the Antarctic Circle. You participate in regular zodiac landings, specialist presentations and optional activities- camping and kayaking.

Many people think that Antarctica is the impossible destination- impossible to get to, impossible to afford, impossible to understand. They are mistaken. Antarctica has always been about possibilities- exciting, breathtaking possibilities.!
Antarctica is so vast that only a small portion of it can be explored during a two-week period. The Antarctic Peninsula, that part of the continent that points towards the tip of South America, is so long that it spans 12 degrees of latitude, approximately 800 miles!
For many, perhaps the most appealing aspect of Antarctica is its wildlife. Although there are only a few native species, those that have adapted to the harsh environment thrive in large numbers. Penguin populations are counted in the tens of thousands in some rookeries!
Antarctica is devoid of power lines, billboards, and highways. There are no designer coffee shops or cellular networks. When the engines are turned off, the only sounds you hear are natural- wildlife, water and the occasional boom of icebergs calving. If you listen closely, you can hear your heart beating with excitement!

Argentina is a land of extremes, its hectic urban centers contrasting with a staggeringly remote hinterland, and can be simultaneously hot in one region and cold in another. The one common thread is that the people possess a curiosity, passion, and fervor for life, most visible when it comes to football, the national obsession. Evita, the Tango, gauchos and estancias are the country’s clichéd attractions, but what strikes visitors most is that life here is for living – the fast pace only letting up for the afternoon siesta. Argentina’s national parks teem with wildlife and incredible mountainous vistas, while the colossal Perito Moreno Glacier and Iguazú Falls are natural wonders. The Andes offer excellent skiing – the ski-resort of Bariloche being the country’s most established. Horse riding, adventure sports and bird watching are just a few of the other activities on offer throughout the country. Argentina, vastly unexplored and undiscovered by most tourists, is an adventure waiting to happen.

Welcome to Antarctica! If your personal quest is to set foot on Antarctica, but also having traveled a considerable distance, to explore the remote Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) and isolated South Georgia, this is the ideal adventure ship voyage. This active, adrenaline inducing expedition is on an ice-strengthened vessel equipped with Zodiacs, and on selected departures gear for skiing, kayaking, or mountaineering. This extended adventure provides additional opportunities for landings, wildlife encounters and photography. You’ll be traveling during the austral spring and summer, when the weather is changeable. Rubber boots are essential, but you don’t have to pack them because we loan you a pair for the duration of the voyage.
Embracing the unexpected is a part of the legacy and excitement of expedition travel. There are no guarantees that we can achieve everything we described in this itinerary. A measure of flexibility is something all of us must bring to a polar expedition!

At the very end of the South American continent lies the land that Magellan and his chronicler Pigafetta, while grounded on a desolate coast during the winter of 1520, named Patagonia. This wild and isolated place has figured prominently in the exotic fantasies of armchair adventurers through the ages. Even though the area is large and comprises about a third of Argentina, one is still surprised by the wide range of spectacles contained here. It has some of the hemisphere’s highest peaks, forests of strange primeval trees, several of the world’s noteworthy glaciers, and fossil rich coastal cliffs that were explored by Darwin. The abundance of rare and entertaining wildlife is astounding!

Argentina offers an incredible sort of landscapes to discover. Argentina is a land of extremes: its hectic urban centers contrast with a staggeringly remote hinterland. The country can be simultaneously hot in one region and cold in another. It is Argentina’s natural history that truly astounds. It is so topographically diverse that there is something for everyone. Come explore Buenos Aires, arguably the most cosmopolitan city in all South America, where you’ll explore the major sights and landmarks of this fascinating city. Then, on to El Calafate- the gateway to Glaciers National Park, where you’ll admire the Perito Moreno Glacier, an imposing river of ice and make a “mini-trek” over the glacier. And finally, Iguazú Falls, where you will marvel at the spectacular falls and admire the whole system of more than 270 falls and where you will see many species of wildlife.

Climb to the highest point in South America on this once-in-a-lifetime adventureAconcagua is in Argentina, only a short distance from the Chilean border. It is the highest mountain in the Americas, as well as the highest in the Southern and Western hemispheres. At 6962 metres above sea level, it is a towering sentinel that attracts people from around the world to challenge themselves through unpredictable weather, freezing temperatures and adverse conditions to reach the summit and stand atop 'The Roof of the Americas’'.

This expedition offers those with a high level of fitness, determination and sense of adventure, the opportunity to climb one of the Seven Summits (the highest mountain in each continent). It is a difficult climb; however it is something which is possible to achieve without previous mountaineering experience provided you prepare well, both physically and mentally for the climb.

You will be climbing the North East (or ‘Normal’ Route), as this will provide the best opportunity for you to reach the summit. You will be fully briefed and instructed by our guides in techniques and procedures, giving you the necessary skills and confidence to help you achieve your goal. Each expedition member will have to carry their own personal equipment on the mountain and we must be prepared to work as a team for the expedition to be a success.

The classic ascent of South America's toughest trekking peak
Aconcagua, at 6962m, is the highest peak in the world outside the Himalaya. While the climb is not technically difficult, the altitude, extremes of temperature and sometimes high winds require a high level of fitness, concentration and stamina. Our initial trek up the Horcones Valley takes us to base camp (4350m) for several acclimatisation hikes, training excursions and equipment carrying days before our attempt on the summit via a high altitude camp (5930m). The rewards for our determination are stunning Andean views and the possibility of standing on the roof of the Americas.

In the language of the local Guarani Indian, the name 'Iguazu' literally means 'great waters'. As the Iguazu River plunges over 70-metre-high cliffs on a 2.7 kilometre front, it splits into more than 275 separate waterfalls. The ensuing result is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world.

This short, independent adventure can be added to any of your tours and offers two nights' accommodation in the Argentine town of Puerto Iguazu, arrival transfer and a full day excursion to the Argentine side of the falls. You can also add an optional excursion to the Brazilian side of the falls on your final day, to get a complete overview of this amazing natural wonder.

This extraordinary horse riding expedition crosses the towering Andes mountains, following in the path of the army of General José de San Martín – one of South America's most famous independence heroesIn January 1817, the rebel Andes Army under the command of Argentinean General San Martin spearheaded its way across the Andes and defeated the Spanish at Chacabuco in Chile. Our 11-day Andean horse riding adventure retraces much of San Martin's route over these stunning mountains. The scenery is breathtaking and the riding challenging, as our expedition takes us past imposing Mount Aconcagua (6962m) - the highest mountain in the Americas. Sure-footed mountain horses carry us over the narrow, windswept passes and through steep sided gorges. We continue on, fording fast flowing streams before descending into lush, tranquil valleys. Experienced Argentinean horsemen or 'gauchos' guide us and pack mules carry our camping equipment and supplies. This horseback adventure is for those riders, seeking a challenging 8-day trail ride amidst one of the most spectacular mountain chains in the world.
