The City of Athens

Athens is a active and cosmopolitan metropolis, a large modern town, known as the birthplace of democracy and with a populace of 3.7 million residents approximately. It is in several ways the birthplace of Classical Greece, and therefore of Western civilization, largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European Continent.

The Athens metropolitan zone is the heart of economic, financial, industrial, cultural and political life in Greece, which contains the port of Piraiévs and numerous suburbs, justifies most of industrial output. Manufactures contains silk, wool, and cotton textiles, machine tools, steel, ships, food products, beverages, chemicals, pottery, printed materials, and carpets. Greater Athens is a transportation hub, served by rail lines, major roads, airlines, and oceangoing vessels. There is a huge tourist industry. Water for the town is supplied by the Marathón reservoir (1931), formed by a dam made of Pentelic marble. The town is also promptly becoming a leading business core in the European Union. The town proper has a land area of 39 km² while the urban agglomeration of Athens spans 412 km².

Visitors today perhaps shocked to find a town nothing like they had imagined. A huge, overwhelming proportion of the town and its nearest suburbs are subject to bad urban planning and unimaginative 1970s architecture. There are few green spaces in the central areas of the town, and the urban sprawl does an injustice to the town's glorious past.
