Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Description: Enjoy a scenic drive along the Kilauea Crater Rim which circles the Kilauea summit caldera and carters leading through rainforest and desert, with marked scenic stops, and short walks on the way. Highlights are the Steam Vents, Jaggar Museum, Halema’uma’u Crater, Devastation Trail, Kilauea iki Crater, and Thurston Lava Tube.

Kilauea Crater Overlook 


Description: Moments after entering the park the main road begins to encircle the Kilauea Caldera, the most active volcano on Earth. The Caldera covers are large are and is approximately 1.8 by 3 miles (3x5 km) in diameter. Kilauea is the home of Pele, the 


Hawaiian volcano godess. Since 1952 there have been 34 eruptions, and since January 1983 eruptive activity has been continuous along the east rift zone.

How long we stop here: You will drive along the crater making a stop at the Jagger Museum to view the crater

Thurston Lava Tube

Description: Walk along an easy trail through a lush pristine tree fern forest and go below ground through a cavelike lava tube. Hundreds of years ago lava once filled the tube, but today it is lighted with stairs and walkways for a safe and enjoyable walk.
Location: Crater Rim Drive, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
How long we stop here: A 20 minute 1/3 mile walk though a tree fern forest and lighted prehistoric cavelike lava tube.

Kalapana Black Sand Beach

Description: See one of Big Island’s magnificent black sand beaches. To access the beach you will have to walk a short distance approx ¼ mile (.5 km) over uneven rocky terrain, closed toed shoes are recommended.
Location: South of Hilo outside of the Volcanoes National Park
How long we stop here: Approximately 40 minutes

Jaggar Museum


Description: Built on the edge of Kilauea Caldera, visitors may enjoy spectacular views of the caldera and the main crater Halema`uma`u from this view point. The current eruption that began in March of 2008 is billowing an ash-laden fume cloud with spectacular views from the museum.
Location: Along Crater Rim Drive, overlooking the Kilauea Caldera
How long we stop here: About 20-30 minutes

Liliuokalani Gardens

Description: Built in the early 1900s, this Edo-style Japanese gardens is said to be the largest of its kind outside of Japan. The garden contains beautifully landscaped footpaths, statues, pagodas, and bridges around many koi ponds.
Location: This 30-acre Japanese style park is located along Banyan Drive
How long we stop here: Drive By, Time-Permitting 5 min stop

Banyan Drive

Description: See some of Hawaii’s largest Indian and Chinese Banyan Trees, which were planted by celebrities from around the world during the early 1900s, including Babe Ruth, President F.D.R., Amelia Earhart, and many more.
Location: Located on the historic waterfront of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii

Kuhio Bay (Hilo Bay)


  Description: See one of Hawaii’s largest black sand beaches and the site two devastating tsunamis, one in 1946 triggered by an Aleutian island earthquake, and the other in 1960 from a Chilean quake.


Location: Northeastern Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii

Moku Ola (Coconut Island)

Description: Coconut Island is a small island in Hilo Bay, located just offshore from Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo. Native Hawaiians once used this island as a special place for healing; Moku Ola literally means “healing island”.
Location: Northeastern Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii
